ERTMS Level 2 testing starts in the Commuter Network of Madrid

The Spanish Civil Works Ministry has started the testing for the operation of the ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) Level 2 system in Chamartín and Atocha stations trough the tunnel of Sol in Madrid Commuter Network. This is the first time in Europe that ERTMS Level 2 system, mainly used for train control in the high speed lines, is implemented in a network with a high traffic density as Madrid commuter network.
Civil Works Minister, Ana Pastor, together with the Madrid Community President, Esperanza Aguirre and Madrid Mayoress, Ana Botella, have attended today to the first test of this advanced technology, which allows to guarantee the highest levels of safety and capacity of the line.
ERTMS Level 2 is being installed in the Chamartín-Sol-Atocha tunnel and in Atocha and Chamartín, two of the stations with a highest commuter traffic volume of Spain. Since last March 1st, ERTMS Level 1 is in commercial service in C4 commuter line, between Parla and Colmenar Viejo and in its branch to Alcobendas and San Sebastián de los Reyes. This commissioning is the first application of the ERTMS Level 1 in a commuter network in all Europe.
ERTMS technology from Thales and Dimetronic
Dimetronic and Thales are responsible for the installation and commissioning of the trackside equipment of the automatic train protection ETCS (European Train Control System) Level 2, after the commissioning of the ERTMS Level 1.
ERTMS Level 2, which offers the same safety levels in operational terms as Level 1, allows the increase of the management capacity of the line and therefore, the number of trains in circulation, over the Level 1 ERTMS.
The implementation of the ERTMS system on the line, with a total of 190km, has being directly managed by the Civil Works Ministry through the Railway General Direction. The technology supply for the two stations with the highest level of commuter traffic in Spain, Atocha and Chamartín, has been the main part of the project.
The technological capacity and experience of Dimetronic and Thales in the installation, testing and commissioning of ERTMS systems has allowed an installation plan without affecting the normal operation of the line.
ERTMS Level 2 system receives the movement authorities from the Chamartín Control Centre (CTC) and it sends to each train the information of the line where it is at this moment: lengths, speeds, slopes, trackside equipments and signals status. These communications are done trough GSM-R system (railway mobile communication system).
Thales and Dimetronic, with a relevant national and international experience in railway signalling solutions both for high speed lines and conventional and metro networks, have participated together in the deployment of the ERTMS system in the Spanish high speed network. Nowadays, both companies are leaders in the development and commissioning the ERTMS system in Spain, with more than 1,200 km in service.
